How the gravel calculator works

The calculator converts installed depth to feet, multiplies by area to get volume, applies your project allowance, then estimates weight using the bulk density you enter.

weight = volume × bulk density

Example

A 20 × 10 ft area at 3 in deep contains 50 ft³ before a project allowance. The tonnage depends on the actual density of the gravel product.

Density matters: gravel type, particle size, moisture, and compaction can change weight. Use supplier data for the specific material whenever possible.

Gravel calculator FAQ

Should I order by cubic yard or ton?

That depends on the supplier. This calculator shows both a volume estimate and an approximate weight conversion.

Why is density editable?

Different aggregate products can have materially different bulk densities, so a fixed hidden value can mislead.

Does compaction change the order?

It can. Installed depth and loose-delivery volume may differ, so confirm the supplier’s recommended allowance.
