Compacted thickness matters
Asphalt is often specified by compacted thickness and purchased by weight. Start with the finished area and compacted depth, then use the supplier's mix density for a closer tonnage estimate.
volume ft³ = length × width × thickness ÷ 12
order tons = volume ft³ × (1 + allowance) × density ÷ 2000
Density assumption
The default 145 lb/ft³ is a planning value near the range often used for hot-mix asphalt estimates. Actual density varies by mix, aggregate and compaction. Replace it with the supplier's value when available.
Example
A 50 × 12 ft area at 2 in compacted thickness is 1,200 ft² and about 200 ft³ before allowance. The final tonnage depends on the selected density.
FAQ
Does this account for compaction?
The input is explicitly labeled compacted thickness. Do not add a second hidden compaction factor unless your paving supplier tells you to.
Can I use this for a road?
It can provide an early quantity estimate for simple rectangular areas, but road projects normally require a detailed paving takeoff and engineering review.
