Quick answer: Estimate concrete masonry units for a wall using wall dimensions, openings, block face size and waste. Start with actual measurements, use the product label for coverage or yield, and treat the result as a planning estimate until site conditions and supplier requirements are confirmed.

Estimate CMU/block quantities from wall dimensions, openings, face size and a visible waste allowance.

Wall inputs

How block quantity is estimated

The calculator subtracts openings from gross wall area and divides the remaining area by the face area of one block. The default 16 × 8 in face is a common planning size, but actual units vary.

net area = wall length × height − openings
blocks = net area ÷ block face area × (1 + waste)

What this does not include

This is a quantity estimate. It does not calculate bond patterns, corners, lintels, bond beams, reinforcement, mortar, grout or engineering requirements.

FAQ

Why is 16 × 8 in the default?

It is a common nominal face dimension for concrete masonry units used for quick estimating. Confirm the actual unit dimensions with your supplier.

Do openings need to be exact?

Use the combined area of doors, windows and other large openings. Small penetrations can be handled with a project-specific takeoff.
