How the estimate works
Net surface area equals wall area minus measured openings. One 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 square feet. The calculator applies your waste allowance, rounds sheets up, and provides separate planning estimates for screws and joint compound.
Sheets = ceiling((length × height − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ 32)
Planning notes
- Use actual board dimensions when your supplier sells a different size.
- Ten percent waste suits many simple rooms; complex cuts may need more.
- Screw and compound estimates vary with framing, board thickness, finish level and local practice.
- Confirm moisture, fire-rating and code requirements before buying.
