Quick answer: Calculate rectangular excavation and fill volume in cubic feet, cubic yards or cubic meters. Start with actual measurements, use the product label for coverage or yield, and treat the result as a planning estimate until site conditions and supplier requirements are confirmed.

Estimate excavation, fill or stockpile volume from length, width and average depth.

Transparent formula

How earthwork volume is calculated

For a simple rectangular excavation, multiply length by width by average depth. The result is an in-place geometric volume. Loose haul volume and compacted fill volume can be different because soil swells when excavated and shrinks or compacts when placed.

volume = length × width × average depth
cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27

Worked example

A 30 ft × 20 ft area at 2 ft average depth is 1,200 ft³, or about 44.44 yd³ in place.

Planning only: irregular grades, slopes, unsuitable soil, swell, shrinkage, compaction, disposal and truck capacity require project-specific review.
