Volume first, weight second
Sand is normally purchased by bulk volume or weight depending on the supplier. This calculator computes geometric volume first, then applies your chosen bulk density to estimate weight.
volume ft³ = length × width × depth ÷ 12
order yd³ = volume ft³ × (1 + waste) ÷ 27
weight lb = order ft³ × density
Density is not universal
Moisture, gradation and material type change bulk density. The default 100 lb/ft³ is only a planning assumption. Use the supplier's stated density when you have it.
Common uses
- Sand beds under pavers
- Leveling layers
- Masonry sand planning
- Landscape and drainage projects
FAQ
How many tons of sand do I need?
Enter a realistic bulk density and the calculator converts the estimated volume to short tons.
Should I add waste?
Yes, when depth or site conditions are uncertain. Keep the allowance visible so you can adjust it rather than hiding it in the result.
